Description
A seductively rich and well-balanced Pauillac Premier Cru Classé
The estate
It was in 1853 that Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired Château Brane-Mouton at auction. Located in the heart of the Médoc, in the appellation of Pauillac, the estate was renamed Château Mouton Rothschild. In 1924, Baron Philippe de Rothschild took over the reins of the property. A visionary, he decided to initiate bottling directly at the estate and also designed a label for the wine. In 1973 Château Mouton Rothschild became a First Classified Growth. An icon of the Pauillac appellation, Château Mouton Rothschild has produced magnificent Bordeaux wines, known by wine lovers around the world.
The vineyard
Château Mouton Rothschild produces Pauillac wines from a 90-hectare vineyard, located to the north-west of Bordeaux in the Médoc region. The vines are planted in stony, gravelly soils that capture the heat and restore it during the night, thus helping the grapes ripen. These poor, well-drained soils are lain over clay-gravelly subsoils, lending the wines of Château Mouton Rothschild a certain power, elegance and a tannic structure.
The label
The label for the 2015 vintage, signed by Philippe Sereys de Rothschild following the passing of Baroness Philippine de Rothschild in 2014, was created by German artist Gerhard Richter. Born in 1932, Richter is a master of artistic experimentation, oscillating between figuration and abstraction, painting and photography. For this vintage, he proposes Flux, a work resulting from a process combining chance and mastery: colors in motion frozen at the perfect moment. This work reflects the quest for harmony and balance that characterizes the creation of a great wine, such as Château Mouton Rothschild 2015, a symbol of fullness and elegance.
The vintage
The year 2015 was particularly dry from February to July, i.e. from budburst to veraison, which had an impact on the size of the grapes. The significant rainfall recorded in August and September was beneficial for the vineyard, which had already been affected by water stress, and ensured an optimal ripening of the grapes. In order to harvest the grapes at perfect maturity, the harvest was exceptionally long, from 14 September to 2 October 2015.
The blend
Château Mouton Rothschild 2015 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (82%), Merlot (16%) and Cabernet Franc (2%).
Château Mouton Rothschild 2015: Characteristics and tasting tips
The tasting
Colour
A beautiful dark colour with subtle purple highlights.
Nose
The fine, elegant and complex nose blends fruity (wild blackberry, blueberry), toasted and fresh liquorice fragrances with notes of light tobacco.
Palate
The ample and beautifully fresh attack harmoniously blends intensity and salinity. The palate is seduced by this wine’s creamy tannins, its enfolding structure and its flavoursome minerality. The palate reveals rich fruity and spicy aromas. The finish is persistent and beautifully balanced. Fleshy and opulent, the 2015 Mouton Rothschild wine resonates with another legendary vintage, the 2005 vintage.
