The property
Founded in the 18th century, the Château Ormes de Pez is located in the Médoc, in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Owned by the Cazes family since 1939, Château Ormes de Pez has undergone significant renovations and modernizations both in terms of tools and the vineyard. The estate takes its name from "pez" meaning "peace" in local dialect, as well as from the elms that existed on the estate before these trees almost disappeared from Europe due to a disease.
The wines of Château Ormes de Pez are made with the same attention and care as those of Château Lynch-Bages, Cru Classé de Pauillac, also owned by the Cazes family. Reflecting the typical style of Saint-Estèphe, the wines of Château Ormes de Pez combine indulgence and fruit brightness with a meaty texture, a powerful substance promising them beautiful years of aging.
The vineyard
Located north of the town of Saint-Estèphe, the vineyard of Château Ormes de Pez extends over 40 hectares of vines planted on two distinct terroirs. Thus, we find the famous Garonne gravels, gravelly plots on quartz and rolled pebble soils on which the cabernets flourish perfectly. The terroir of Château Ormes de Pez is also marked by the presence of clay-sandy plots which are cooler and suitable for merlot. The vines are 35 years old on average.
The vintage
2024 begins with a mild and rainy winter, leading to an early and homogeneous bud break. The wet spring requires constant vigilance, but the responsiveness of the teams allows to preserve the potential of the vines. The hot but moderate summer promotes slow and balanced maturation, enhancing the aromas while maintaining freshness. The precise and selective harvests deliver healthy and ripe grapes.
Vinification and aging
Manual harvest with selective sorting in the vineyard and on the table. Aging in wood (45% new barrels) for a duration of 16 months.
Blend
Merlot (48%), cabernet sauvignon (41%), petit verdot (6%) and cabernet franc (5%).
