Description
Chateau Saint-Pierre 2012: A successful Classified Fourth Growth from Saint-Julien
Classified Fourth Growth, Chateau Saint-Pierre is a red wine produced in the Saint-Julien appellation. The 17 hectare vineyard has vines planted that are, on average, 50 years old. The soil is composed of gunzian gravel and a sandy-clay sub-soil. Chateau Saint-Pierre is aged in barrels for 14-16 months, on average, 60% in new barrels. 2012 is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot.
Chateau Saint-Pierre 2012 experienced relatively normal weather conditions. There was a lack of precipitation in the winter and the temperatures varied between mild and very cold. Bud burst was irregular to the wide variation in temperature. Spring was cold and further complicated the flowering process. August was a great month for the grapes, allowing the grapes to mature. A lot of vine-work was also required (prophylactic measures and splitting secondary buds during flowering). The grapes were tasted several times to ensure that they were harvested at the best stage of maturity. Harvest was from October 3-17.
