The property
An essential reference for Italian wines, Borgogno is one of the oldest producers in Langa and Piedmont. Founded in 1761, the Borgogno estate experienced significant international development in the 1920s, under the impetus of Cesare Borgogno. The Farinetti family acquired the estate in 2008. Andrea Farinetti has been at the head of the estate since 2010.
The vineyard
Conducted in a sustainable manner without any use of chemical inputs, this Piedmont vineyard extends over 30.8 hectares of vines planted on a soil composed of clay-limestone marls contributing to the unique signature of the estate's wines.
The wine
Liste Riserva from the Borgogno estate is a Barolo wine from a 6.75 hectare vineyard, located between 290-370 meters above sea level and facing south on a soil composed of clay-limestone marls.
The vintage
The year 2019 followed a classic vegetative cycle but punctuated by surprises. A prolonged winter until February delayed spring, while an unstable start to summer slowed the development of the vine. The hot summer, marked by a heat wave in July and some storms, did not cause damage to the vineyards. The harvest offered a slightly reduced production, but of exceptional quality, with grapes rich in sugars and polyphenols, ensuring wines of great structure and remarkable aging potential.
Vinification and aging
The grapes are destemmed and pressed before spontaneous fermentation in cement tanks for 15 days, followed by a 30-day maceration with submerged cap, allowing to extract all the complexity of the terroir. This is also when malolactic fermentation takes place. The wine is then transferred to large Slavonian oak casks for aging for about 2 years and 9 months. It then goes into cement tanks before bottling, followed by a long aging in the cellar. A limited production, capturing all the iconicity of this Barolo.
