An exceptional vintage magnified by a case of Premier Crus Classés from Sauternes

For the first time in the history of Bordeaux wines, 5 Premier Crus Classés from the same appellation come together to create a unique bottle, offered in a case that also includes the 5 great wines from each château from the 2017 vintage.

A wind of renewal has been blowing in Sauternes in recent years, and the 5 Premier Crus Classés of 1855, namely Châteaux Sigalas Rabaud, de Rayne Vigneau, Lafaurie-Peyraguey, La Tour Blanche and Rabaud-Promis are not strangers to this. After a first successful joint action on the 5-star Sauternes case released in February 2018, which included a bottle of the 2009 vintage from each property, and primeur releases on the same day for the 2016 and 2017 vintages, the pace has stepped up with this 5-star 5+ case.

These neighboring properties in the commune of Bommes have decided to create an "oenological dream" and to transcribe in a single bottle the peculiarities of their terroir by blending their great wine. The project seemed complex on paper, but the obviousness took shape from the first attempt at blending, the simplest, the rawest, and the most egalitarian: 1/5th of each great wine from the 2017 vintage, there was no need to look any further.

5+ is both the continuity of a strong dynamic between these Sauternes properties and the prism of their peculiarities, their differences, a condensed expression of the greatest terroirs of Bommes.

This innovative case is an undeniable rarity. Château Sigalas Rabaud 2017, Château de Rayne Vigneau 2017, Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey 2017, Château La Tour Blanche 2017, Château Rabaud-Promis 2017 and the bottle of Sauternes 5+ 2017 make up an oenological journey of rare relevance in a legendary vintage of Sauternes. A safe bet.

The vintage

According to legend, the years ending in 7 produced in Sauternes are exceptional. This is confirmed with this 2017 vintage, in line with the 1987, 1997, 2007 vintages. The botrytis developed quickly on grapes of excellent quality. Harvested in 3 to 5 passes depending on the properties from mid-September to late October, the harvests give birth to wines revealing freshness, tension, power, acidity, fruitiness as well as a beautiful harmony.
