Description

A seductive Hermitage wine of richness and balance

The estate

For centuries, perched on a majestic hill in Tain-l'Hermitage, stands a monument of viticulture: Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné. Embodying the quintessence of the great wines of the Northern Rhône Valley, the estate was taken over by the Frey Family in 2006. In pursuit of innovation, the Frey family recently created a new setting for the production of two of its cuvées: La Chapelle and Chevalier de Stérimberg. Taking the name of the Domaine de la Chapelle, this new entity, which will be equipped with an exceptional cellar designed by the famous Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, reflects the quest for excellence led by Caroline Frey and her team to produce ever more precise wines.

The vineyard

Resulting from a rigorous selection of the most beautiful plots in the west of the appellation, this Hermitage wine is made from old vines planted between 1955 and 1994, trained in stakes and planted on a mosaic of terroirs contributing to the signature of this exceptional cuvée.

The vintage

The autumn-winter 2021-2022 campaign was marked by a significant deficit in precipitation, while temperatures remained within seasonal norms. After a late bud break, vine growth accelerated, resulting in a rapid flowering, between May 15 and 31, under high temperatures. By the end of June, the closure of the bunch is achieved on the majority of plots. The summer begins with a stormy episode offering a temporary respite to the vine, which remains generally healthy. However, between July and mid-August, the heatwave sets in without precipitation, putting the vineyard to the test. The salvific rains of mid-August finally revitalize the vine, allowing it to regain some balance before the harvest.

Vinification and aging

Hand-harvested, the grapes are sorted at the plot. Alcoholic fermentation of about 10 days with indigenous yeasts from the Northern Rhône. Gentle extractions via punch-downs and pump-overs. Malolactic fermentation then aging for 12 months in French oak barrels, 15% of which are new.

Blend

100% syrah.
