The estate
Founded in 1983, the name of the Donnafugata estate, "fleeing woman" in Italian, recalls the exile of Queen Maria Carolina of Naples at the home of a local prince, as Napoleon seized the city.
Giacomo Rallo, the founder of this estate in north-west Sicily, is the fourth generation of the family which, since 1851, has produced wine renowned for its great quality.
Spread across five different sites, the Donnafugata estate takes its individuality from its many various terroirs, which confer into each wine a unique style reflecting the richness of the Sicilian soil.
The wine
First produced in 1990, this Tancredi by the Donnafugata estate is produced in the Terre Siciliane IGT appellation, from the finest grapes grown in the Contessa Entellina vineyards, on hills in southwestern Sicily comprising predominantly clay soils.
Tancredi Dolce&Gabbana Limited Edition 2018 by Donnafugata marks the collaboration between two iconic brands and global ambassadors, showcasing Sicilian culture and the excellence of Made in Italy.
These two institutions, which embody elegance, craftsmanship and creativity, have brilliantly reinterpreted this estate’s historic vintage. To mark this collaboration, the wine is adorned with an exclusive label designed by Dolce&Gabbana, whose design pays tribute to both the Italian baroque and aristocratic tradition and to the revolutionary values that emerged in Sicily following the unification of the country.
The vintage
The year 2018 was marked by significant rainfall, mostly during the spring and summer months. Despite the heavy humidity, the agronomic practices put in place enabled the estate to preserve the vineyard’s state of health, thus harvesting perfectly ripe grapes.
The vinification and ageing
Hand-picked and sorted in the vineyard, the grapes are transported to the vat house in crates, in order to respect the integrity of the grapes. Fermentation is carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by a 14-day skin contact maceration. This Sicilian wine is aged in new French oak barrels or several fill barrels for 12 months, followed by 2 years of additional ageing in bottles before being put on the market.
