A second wine from Pauillac from the prestigious Mouton Rothschild terroir
The property
Château Mouton Rothschild, founded in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, is an emblematic estate of Bordeaux, located in Pauillac in the Médoc. Spanning 91 hectares, it is the only one to have been reclassified as a first grand cru in 1973. Currently led by the descendants of Philippine de Rothschild, the estate stands out for its innovations, such as bottling at the château and its annual artistic labels. The vineyard, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, benefits from an exceptional terroir, contributing to the worldwide renown of its wines.
The vineyard
Petit Mouton comes from the 82 hectares in production of the Mouton Rothschild vineyard in Pauillac. The vines, with an average age of 50 years, are planted on a terroir of deep gravels characteristic of the appellation. This combination of old vines and gravelly soils gives the wine its remarkable structure and Médoc typicity.
The vintage
The year 2024 began with a mild winter with abundant precipitation, followed by an early bud break at the end of March, a week ahead of average. After a relatively dry April, May saw significant rainfall with cool temperatures and moderate sunshine, increasing the pressure of mildew. Flowering and fruit set were marked by phenomena of shatter and millerandage on the early Merlots and Cabernets. The summer was mild with a progressive water deficit, allowing the harvest to begin on September 23 and end under the sun in early October.
Vinification and aging
Precise parcel-by-parcel vinification, respecting the characteristics of each grape variety. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new, allowing for a harmonious integration of the tannins and the development of its aromatic complexity.
Blend
Cabernet Sauvignon (67%), Merlot (26%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and a touch of Petit Verdot (2%).
