Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken over the running of this iconic house, which comprises over 350 hectares of vineyards in the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley region.
The vineyard
A plot selection, Mr Chapoutier's Le Méal 2020 is an Ermitage wine made from grapes grown on the eponymous hillside. The soil of these high terraces is made up of rolled pebbles and clay. These old vines, over 50 years old on average, are known for their low yields, which produce high-quality wines.
Vinification and ageing
Hand-picked when fully ripe. The grapes are 100% destemmed and vinified in a small cement vat. Maceration at high temperature in order to favour optimal extraction and obtain supple and silky tannins, the guarantee of a lengthy ageing potential. This plot selection is made exclusively from free-run wine. The wine is aged for 14 to 18 months in new or second-fill barrels. Clarification is done naturally.
The blend
Syrah (100%).
