A veritable legend, Clos Mogador is one of those estates that set off the revolution in the Priorat vineyards, an arid, remote region of Catalonia in northern Spain. The origins of the Priorat vineyards date back to the 12th century, when the monks of the Charterhouse of the Scala Dei monastery settled and shaped the Priorat vineyards.
800 years later, in 1979, Isabelle and René Barbier decided to settle in this lost paradise, close to the small village of Gratallops, to once again cultivate the forgotten vines of the Priorat region. The couple decided to name their estate "le Clos Mogador" in homage to Élisabeth Barbier, René Barbier's aunt and famous author of the famous book "les gens de Mogador".
Set in a magnificent natural amphitheatre, Clos Mogador owes its distinctive character to its exceptional terroir. The old vines of Carignan, Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are planted on the black slate schist soils known as "llicorella," which make the Priorat so special. With very low yields, these exceptional vines planted on steep slopes produce small berries of great aromatic richness.
René Barbier, legendary Priorat winemaker, was one of the pioneers of the Priorat renaissance. Produced with the greatest respect for the fruit and the terroir, in a traditional way and in very limited quantities, each of the Clos Mogador wines invites you to discover the full typicity of the mineral and fruity expression of the Priorat. These wines have become emblematic, revealing to the world the extraordinary quality of Priorat wines.
