Description

An outstanding Château Angélus in an exceptional vintage

The estate

The name Château Angélus comes from the winegrowers who used to ring the bells of three churches simultaneously in the heart of the famous medieval town of Saint-Émilion. This legendary property of the appellation was founded in 1782 and, for 8 generations, the de Boüard de Laforest family has overseen this exceptional heritage on Bordeaux’s Right Bank.

The vineyard

Château Angélus is a Saint-Emilion wine from an exceptional terroir whose vines are located on the southern slope of Saint-Emilion. This terroir extends over clay-limestone soils on the upper part and clay-sand-limestone soils on the hillside.

The wine

While the beginning of the year left little hope due to the late nature of the vintage and a disrupted growth cycle, 2018 surpassed all expectations of the magnificent Premier Grand Cru Classé A, Château Angélus.

Named "the Phoenix," Château Angélus 2018 is ultimately among the greatest vintages ever produced by the emblematic Saint-Emilion property.

The vintage

The climatic conditions at the beginning of 2018 required constant attention from the winegrowers. But it was in mid-July that the miracle occurred with an exceptional summer that lasted until the harvest. The cool nights and sufficient water reserves avoided any hydric stress on the vines, allowing the ripening of the grapes to be ideally refined, with good polyphenol qualities and a lively acidity.

2018 also marks the first vintage of the estate's organic farming conversion cycle.

Blend

Merlot (65%)

Colour
The colour has a beautiful depth.

Nose
The nose entices with its aromatic purity, releasing delicious black fruit notes.

Palate
The palate reveals a slight sweetness balanced by a beautiful tension full of elegance highlighting the refined and velvety structure of the tannins. The finish is long and lingering with notes of fruit and spices, supported by the elegant Cabernet Franc. With its own sensory profile, Château Angélus 2018 lends itself to comparison with vintages that have written the legend of Bordeaux, such as the 2000, 2005 or 2010. An exceptional vintage, Château Angélus 2018 has all the qualities to surpass its peers in the years to come. The Merlot grapes are very fresh, while very old Cabernet Franc grapes from the best clay-limestone soils have been selected.
