Château Chauvin is located in the northwest of the commune of Saint-Émilion, between Cheval Blanc and the Butte de Rol, on the edge of the Pomerol appellation. With its 15 hectares of vineyard in one piece surrounding the property, Château Chauvin oversees an exceptional terroir. The vines are planted on a clayey-sandy soil with a presence of pseudogley and iron residue. The vineyard is mainly planted with Merlot, supplemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
This property sees its origins dating back to 1852, when the former great fiefdom of Corbin was divided. Château Chauvin was classified among the 80 crus selected out of nearly 100 crus listed during the first classification of the crus of Saint-Émilion in 1954. Under the direction of Béatrice and Marie-France Ondet, the property expanded, bringing the total vineyard area to 15 hectares. Many investments in the vat-room were made. The acquisition of the property in 2014 by Sylvie Cazes and her children, Julie, Pierre and François Régimbeau marks the beginning of a new era in the history of Château Chauvin. Both in the vineyard and in the cellar, a major restructuring programme has been put in place.
In-depth study of the soils and subsoils, working the soil underfoot, plant work, implementation of a replanting program and planting density increased to 8,000 vines/ha on the new plots, Château Chauvin has undergone significant changes in the vineyard. In the cellar, the same logic of renewal is present. The grapes are picked in small pierced crates that can carry 15 kg of grapes and the harvest is cooled in a dedicated container. Finally, the most meticulous selection is carried out thanks to a latest-generation destemmer and double sorting carried out upon receiving the harvest.
The evolution of Château Chauvin also resulted in the adoption of a new visual identity thanks to the rediscovery of a label dating from 1929 found in the archives of the property. This label, which has appeared on the bottle of Château Chauvin since 2014, is also illustrated with a strong symbol: Cupid, the god of love, wearing a banner on which is represented the lion emblem of Saint-Émilion.
