Description
The vivacity and richness of a Pessac-Léognan white wine
The estate
Château Carbonnieux was founded in the 13th century by the Benedictine monks of Sainte-Croix Abbey. Château Carbonnieux is located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation and is one of the oldest châteaux in Bordeaux. In 1956, Marc Perrin acquired the château, which became a cru classé in 1959 in both red and white.
The vineyard
Château Carbonnieux 2022 is a Pessac-Léognan wine produced from vineyards spread over a mosaic of terroirs ranging from clay-limestone to Günzian gravel. 45 hectares are given over to white grape varieties. The vines are 30 years old on average. The entire vineyard has been awarded level 3 High Environmental Value certification. Since 2021, 25% of the vineyard has been farmed organically.
The vintage
A relatively early budburst around 20 March preceded morning frosts which, thanks to late pruning and the rigour of the teams, had little impact on the vineyard. Flowering was uniform. A rainy June gave way to a particularly hot summer, resulting in a concentration of young vines. Despite the low yields, the quality was exceptional.
Winemaking and ageing
Hand-picked, the grapes undergo a double selection on the vine and on a sorting table, before a gentle pneumatic pressing and cold settling. Fermentation takes place in barrels and tuns over 12 days, before the wine is aged in barrels (25% of which are new) for around 10 months, with stirring of the lees.
Blend
Sauvignon Blanc (65%)
Sémillon (35%).
