Description
The freshness and elegance of a Saint-Émilion Classified Growth
The estate
A Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion, Château La Tour Figeac was founded in 1879, at which time it was separated from Château Figeac to which it was historically linked. Since 1994, Otto Maximilian Rettenmaier has been at the head of the property.
The vineyard
The Château La Tour Figeac vineyard enjoys an exceptional location, on the edge of the Pomerol appellation. The 14.6-hectare vineyard is located between Château Cheval Blanc and Château Figeac. The vines, which are 37 years old on average, are planted in very fine gravel-sandy soil upon a subsoil of deep clay. Since 1997, the Château La Tour Figeac vineyard has been cultivated with an eco-friendly viticulture, with the implementation of organic and biodynamic practices. Herbal teas and natural preparations are used to care for the vines, in consideration for the ecosystem as a whole. The estate has gone even further in respecting the environment and the vineyard, as cereals are now planted between the vine rows in order to strengthen the soil and limit erosion.
The vintage
Following a particularly mild winter, and a wet and cool spring, the summer of 2019 brought high temperatures with record temperatures. The rain at the end of July made it possible to limit the water stress of the vineyard. The harvest at Château La Tour Figeac took place between September 20 and October 3, 2019. In the vineyard, the technical teams of the estate carried out a light green harvest, which allowed for good ripeness. The 2019 vintage also marked the second year in the estate’s conversion to organic farming. At the cellar, 2019 was a decisive year since the barrel cellar was completely renovated. La Tour Figeac has also chosen to invest in 400 liter barrels and amphorae. These measures aim to enhance the finesse of the tannins in the estate's wines, while also retaining great purity in the expression of the fruit.
The blend
Merlot (65%), cabernet franc (35%).
The tasting
Tasted as a wine future, the Château La Tour Figeac 2019 offers a beautiful expression of the great terroir of the "Graves de Saint-Émilion". "Freshness, elegance, brightness, intensity", these are the 4 terms used by the property to define this great 2019 vintage of Château La Tour Figeac.
