CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD
X CHIHARU SHIOTA

THE 2021 VINTAGE

The Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota has produced an exclusive design for the 2021 Château Mouton Rothschild label, entitled "Universe of Mouton".
In her creation, the delicate silhouette represents a man who is facing a gleaming, bountiful nature. He is not the centre of attention. He appears small in relation to his surroundings. It's as if the silhouette is clinging to the balance between nature and mankind. If it holds on too tightly, the threads might break, but if it doesn't hold on tightly enough, the cloud will float away and the connection will be broken.
"The four lines linking man to the universe represent the four seasons (winter, spring, summer, autumn) and all the emotions associated with them, loneliness, hope and fulfilment". - Chiharu Shiota

« It's as if the memories of the year are preserved in the wine. I find this fascinating because I also believe that the objects that surround us retain our memories and our existence »
- Chiharu Shiota

THE ARTIST AND THE LABEL

The Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota has created an original design for the 2021 Château Mouton Rothschild label, entitled "Universe of Mouton".
The four lines linking man to nature represent the four seasons, embedding time at the very heart of this piece. While winter brings loneliness and sadness, seeds of hope are planted in spring and blossom in a bountiful summer until autumn reveals their fruitfulness. Regardless of the vintage, the conditions in which the grapes thrived are expressed in the wine.
« When I came to Château Mouton Rothschild, I was very inspired by their relationship with nature. They depend on the climate and don't interfere with Mother Nature. They accept the conditions in which the grapes grow. I think Mouton Rothschild is all about the balance between man and nature. » - Chiharu Shiota
Chiharu Shiota was born in Osaka in 1972 and is currently based in Berlin. Her inspiration often emerges from a personal experience or emotion, which she broadens to encompass universal concerns such as life, death and relationships.

Turning Château Mouton Rothschild
into a world of art and beauty

PAINTINGS FOR THE LABELS

Baron Philippe de Rothschild's goal was to turn Château Mouton Rothschild into a realm of art and beauty. Since 1945, the labels of each vintage of Château Mouton Rothschild have been adorned with original works of art. Year after year, they enrich a unique collection of contemporary art that features very different artists from all walks of life, including Salvador Dalí, César, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Pierre Soulages, Francis Bacon, Balthus, Jeff Koons, David Hockney, Annette Messager, Olafur Eliasson, Peter Doig..
All these artworks are showcased at the "Paintings for the Labels" exhibition, created in 1981 by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, and on permanent display at Château Mouton Rothschild since 2013.
