Description
Chateau Saint-Pierre 2016: a balanced Saint-Julien
Chateau Saint-Pierre is a Fourth Classified Growth of 1855 produced in the Saint-Julien appellation. At an average age of 50, the vines are planted on a 17-hectare vineyard in Günz gravel and a sandy-clay subsoil. The wine is aged in casks (50% new) for an average of 14 to 16 months. The Chateau Saint-Pierre 2016 is made from a blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc.
At Chateau Saint-Pierre, the 2016 vintage was marked by a mild and wet winter that resulted in early budding. The spring was quite lush and rainy, but the blooms survived due to a window of good weather around June 10. Finally, from 18 June, hot and dry weather set in, but the vines had access to the large spring water reserves to get through the growing season. Fortunately, it rained on September 13, allowing the grapes to ripen until the harvest, which took place from September 29 to October 17
Dark red, almost black in colour, the Chateau Saint-Pierre 2016 develops aromas of black fruit and more mineral and vegetal notes. The wine has a balanced mouthfeel with superb tannins, and tasty, subtle mineral touches. There is a good, tense finish. This refined Chateau Saint-Pierre 2016 will keep well until 2037-2047.
