Description
A powerful and elegant Alsace Riesling
The estate
Several times voted the "most admired French brand" in the world by the highly respected "Drinks International" ranking, M. Chapoutier today embodies the elite of the greatest names in the Rhône Valley. Established since 1808 in Tain-L'Hermitage, Maison M. Chapoutier has grown while remaining faithful to the values that make its nobility. Respect for the terroir, audacity, conviviality and generosity, this is the philosophy of M. Chapoutier.
Taking over the torch, Michel Chapoutier has made the family business a brilliant success. Winemaker and merchant, the man with multiple hats holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by the American Robert Parker. Today joined by his daughter Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier ambitiously and flamboyantly leads the destiny of the iconic house.
Over the years, Maison M. Chapoutier has purchased 10 estates in different regions of France and the world, including one in Alsace. The Schieferkopf Estate, located between Colmar and Strasbourg, has been producing organic wines on very qualitative terroirs since 2011.
The vineyard
The 8-hectare estate is located in the village of Bernardvillé, on the paths of Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, not far from the border with Germany. It benefits from a unique terroir in Alsace being located on the only vein of blue schists in the region. The vineyard is at 350 meters altitude, the highest in the region, and is mainly composed of riesling. The cuvées are made from rigorous parcel selections.
The wine
The Riesling "Lieu-dit Fels" cuvée from the Schieferkopf Domaine 2017 by M. Chapoutier is made from vines planted on blue schists from Villé and on an ancient subsoil dating from the Precambrian. The plot from which it comes is southeast facing, is inclined at 30% and undergoes very windy episodes that allow the wine to reveal a delicate minerality.
Vinification and aging
The harvest is done manually in 20 kg crates. A long pressing is carried out as well as a cold settling to protect the wine's aromas. Indigenous yeasts are used for alcoholic fermentation and malolactic fermentation is carried out in its entirety like all the wines of the estate, to achieve a beautiful roundness. Then, the wine is aged in foudres for 15 months.
