Description

The power and finesse of a Burgundy Grand Cru

The estate

Domaine Faiveley, historically established in Nuits-Saint-Georges in the heart of the Côte de Nuits since 1825, is at the head of one of the finest estates in Burgundy. The seventh generation of the family, in the guise of the connoisseur siblings Erwan and Eve Faiveley, has since 2005 carried forward the work of this precious Burgundy jewel. With a vineyard of over 120 hectares, the estate is one of the largest in Burgundy, and also one of the most prestigious. With exceptional Grand Cru and Premier Cru plots, the Faiveley family boasts a remarkable winegrowing heritage.

The vineyard

Although Domaine Faiveley was originally set up in the Côtes de Nuits at Nuits-Saint-Georges, the estate has gradually extended its vineyards to the Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise. Today, Domaine Faiveley owns 12 Grand Crus and 25 Premier Crus in Burgundy and oversees an exceptional winegrowing heritage.

Since 1874, the Faiveley family has held the monopoly of the Clos des Cortons Faiveley, which is both the jewel of the estate and one of only two Grands Crus in Burgundy to bear the name of its owner (the second being Romanée-Conti). This monopole covers 2.76 hectares with east and south-east exposure. The vines were planted in 1936, 1956, 1965, 1967, 1971, 1981, 1987 and 2002 on ferruginous oolite and marl soils.

Winemaking and ageing

The hand-picked grapes undergo a short pre-fermentation maceration before vinification in truncated wooden vats. Vatting lasts more than 3 weeks, followed by gentle, slow pressing to obtain juice of great purity. The wines are aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (50% one-wine barrels and 50% new barrels) in the estate's historic, vaulted cellars dating back to the 19th century.
