Description
The density and indulgence of a Languedoc - Pic Saint Loup wine
The property
If the Bruguière family's passion for the ancestral lands of Pic Saint-Loup dates back 7 generations, the story of Mas Bruguière begins at the end of the 18th century with Antoine Bruguière. This native of Barou acquired lands, woods and fields on which he initiated vine cultivation. Following the devastation of phylloxera in the 1870s, the vineyard was replanted from 1880, focusing exclusively on viticulture.
Following the severe frosts of 1956 that destroyed all the vines, a vineyard of about ten hectares was replanted around the farmhouse, dedicated to the production of table grapes.
In 1974, Guilhem Bruguière and his wife aimed to restore the estate, whose grapes were then dedicated to a cooperative, to its former glory. Following the replanting of traditional grape varieties, the estate's first vintage was unveiled in 1986. Praised by critics, the estate's wines quickly became successful and contributed to the development of the reputation of Languedoc – Pic Saint Loup wines.
Their son, Xavier, now continues the tradition through wines made with deep respect for the environment.
The vineyard
The Domaine de Mas Bruguiere oversees a Languedoc vineyard of 12 hectares spread over two plots. Facing due south under the cliff of Hortus, the first plot consists of old Grenaches and Mourvèdres dating from 1987 and for the youngest vines from 2015. Facing north at the bottom of the slope of Pic Saint Loup, the second plot contains Syrahs planted in 1980 on clay-limestone soils. The entire vineyard is managed using organic farming.
The wine
The Grenadière 2012 from Mas Bruguiere is a Languedoc - Pic Saint Loup wine made from old vines planted on the estate's historic terroir. The Grenache plots are planted on soft limestone scree at the bottom of the slope. The Syrah is grown on clay-limestone soils.
