Clos des Lunes tells the story of an ambitious adventure started in 2011, part mission and part challenge: to produce a legendary dry white wine on the exceptional terroir of Sauternes. This is the success of the iconic Olivier Bernard and his family who are owners of the Domaine de Chevalier in Léognan. They have worked with passion and energy to make Clos des Lunes one of the greatest benchmarks of dry white wines from Bordeaux in a land known for sweet wines.
Clos des Lunes is a true mosaic of terroirs that combines the richness of Barsac red clay-gravel soils and clay-limestone layers. It also has a unique range of diverse slopes that ensure the soils are perfectly drained. Faithful to Sauternes’ terroir, Clos des Lunes pays tribute to the region's favourite grape varieties, Semillon blended subtly with Sauvignon Blanc.
Led with extreme attention, the philosophy of the estate is based on a simple tenant: a permanent quest for excellence designed to reveal the finest expression of this exceptional terroir in the greatest respect for the fruit. For Olivier Bernard, "great wine, it is first of all a great fruit, that is to say the natural expression of a great terroir of which the man only reveals the expression". Due to the expertise from the Chevalier Domaine's technical teams, Clos des Lunes is now recognized for its excellent quality and its unique take on its wines. From the vineyard to the winery, there is extreme attention paid to plot management to capture the most beautiful essence of the terroir in the wines. With absolute precision, vinification is done with the intent to reveal pure, bright fruit and to draw out the terroir’s expression so that the wines are delicious in their youth, yet can develop splendid complexity after 5 to 10 years of cellaring.
Available in 3 labels, Clos des Lunes produces 3 dry white wines. Freshness and harmony characterize the bright vivacity of Lune Blanche while Lune d’Argent offers the model of a perfectly balanced wine dominated with refinement and elegance. Finally, prestigious and rare, Lune d’Or recounts all the ambition of Olivier Bernard: to produce one of the greatest wines in the world in an ultimate expression of purity and complexity that reveals itself superbly as the years pass.
