Quinta do Vesuvio is one of the Douro Valley's most beautiful and oldest estates, thanks to its coolness and altitude. Historical archives trace the estate's existence back to 1565. In the 19th century, Quinta do Vesuvio passed into the hands of Dona Antonia Adelaide Ferreira, and it is due to her that the estate acquired the reputation of being the "Jewel of the Douro." In 1989, the Symington family bought the estate, extending its ancestral involvement in the cultivation, production and sale of Port to new lands.
Quinta do Vesuvio is rooted in an exceptional terroir in Portugal, where the combination of a remarkable soil and microclimate provides the ideal conditions for producing great Port wines.
On the south side of the Douro, the Quinta's 138 hectares of vines cover schist-influenced soil at altitudes ranging from 130 metres to 350 metres. The climate is dry, with extremes of coolness and heat. The 30-40 year-old vines peacefully ripen typical Douro Valley grape varieties, with a preponderance of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Roriz.
The winery is one of the last to continue treading the grapes by foot, giving the wine a cultural, human and passionate dimension. Alongside the production of its famous Ports, Quinta do Vesuvio was the first estate to make DOC Douro wines, which quickly became an international success.
The meeting of a rich terroir and the know-how handed down from generation to generation at Quinta do Vesuvio has resulted in sublime wines that have crossed Portuguese borders to conquer the hearts of great wine lovers the world over.
