Founded in 1911, the domain Joh. Joe. Prüm, also known as J.J.Prüm, is located in the heart of the Mosel valley in Germany, not far from the 50th parallel north latitude line. There, its vineyards are entirely planted with Riesling - mainly old, ungrafted vines. The vines extend over 21 hectares located in the best parts of the best sites of the Middle Moselle. These plots are four in number: Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Bernkasteler Badstube. The estate's lands are therefore anchored in one of the most northern wine regions in the world. Therefore, the vegetation period is extremely long, continuing until November, sometimes even in Decembe, with relatively cool climatic conditions.
Under these conditions, the Riesling grape variety has time to develop all its typical aromas and flavors of fruit, flowers and herbs, but also to maintain a relatively high acidity and to integrate the fine minerals of the slate soils. In order to balance this acidity, the natural sugar in grapes is generally not fully fermented into alcohol. Nevertheless, a certain amount of residual sugar is retained. This method of vinification combined with the cool climatic conditions also results in a rather low alcohol content.
With each vintage, the J.J.Prüm estate aims to express in its wines the essence of its terroir in the most authentic way possible. An ideal harvest period, the least possible treatment in the cellar, the use of indigenous yeasts and rather late bottling characterise the sublime J.J.Prüm wines. Time allows them to open up and they then reflect a unique encounter between fruitiness, minerality and acidity. J.J.Prüm wines are renowned for their remarkable aging potential, their lasting youth and freshness, as well as their expressive and complex character enhanced by their clarity.
