Description
The balance and aromatic richness of a Douro red wine
The estate
As early as 1715, records mention the name Quinta do Noval. António José da Silva, a merchant from the port of Gaia in Porto, acquired Quinta do Noval in 1894, after it had been ravaged by phylloxera. Subsequently, his son-in-law Luiz Vasconcelos Porto launched a major programme to renovate the vineyards. In particular, he widened the narrow dry-stone terraces that shaped the Douro vineyard landscape. Revolutionary at the time, this method made better use of space and sun exposure. Painted with whitewash, these white terraces are still the pride and joy of the Quinta do Noval vineyards, a benchmark for fine Portuguese wines.
The vineyard
This Douro wine stems from a terroir resting on soils that are made up of clay and schist.
The vintage
Following a dry winter, the 2018 vintage was marked by cold temperatures and heavy rainfall until the middle of summer. The second part of the summer period was hot and dry. The raised temperatures spurred on the grapes’ ripening.
Winemaking and ageing
Vinification in stainless steel vats over 10 days before malolactic fermentation. Ageing in French oak barrels, of which 30% were new, for 11 months.
Grape variety
Touriga Nacional (100%).
