Description
A fine white wine from the Moselle region crafted with the great skill of Van Volxem
The estate
Originally a monastery, the estate, acquired in the 18th century by the Van Volxem family, was bought by Roman Niewodniczanski in 2000, whose the ambition was to continue the tradition of excellence in the production of fine Mosel wines. The Van Volxem estate is located near the famous Egon Müller estate in the heart of Wiltingen, one of the first winegrowing strongholds of the Saarland in Germany. With their elegance and rich aromas, the estate's wines are among the world's greatest white wines.
The vineyard
Van Volxem reigns over an exceptional terroir on the banks of the Saar, in Germany, where the cool climate and soils give it an aromatic palette and an intensity that characterise the estate's unique style. The vineyard, part of which is free-run, is cultivated by hand with respect for the environment and according to the precepts of organic farming. Yields are deliberately limited in order to preserve only the grapes that boast an optimum maturity and quality.
The wine
This Bockstein Riesling Spätlese 2020 by Van Volxem is a Mosel wine made from 50 to 100-year-old vines, planted at an altitude of 200 to 350 metres on schistose soil. The residual sugar content of this VDP Grosse Lage white wine is 55.4 g/l.
Winemaking and ageing
The grapes are harvested by hand between the end of October and the beginning of November and placed in vats by gravity in order to preserve their fruit and finesse. Fermentation is carried out using indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats and tuns, as is the 8-month ageing period. Unfined, the wine was bottled in April 2021.
