At the foot of Mount Vultur, in the province of Potenza in Italy, the vineyards of the first appellation of Basilicata take advantage of the beautiful climatic conditions offered by southern Italy. Created in 1971, the DOC Aglianico del Vulture appellation places Basilicata wines among the most outstanding Italian wines.
Mount Vultur rises to an altitude of 1,326 metres. This volcano, extinct for almost 40,000 years, provides a unique terroir in the heart of southern Italy. Its volcanic soils allow the region's favourite grape variety to develop rich and concentrated characteristics. Aglianico flourishes extraordinarily well on the slopes of this ancient witness to history.
On terroirs of altitude, only vineyards which sit at between 200 and 700 metres above sea level can be awarded the DOC (denominazione di origine controllata) Aglianico del Vulture. This is a very important factor, as it leads to a particular exposure and climate. The south-eastern slopes of the volcano benefit from the morning sun. This avoids the fierce afternoon rays and allows for cooler temperatures. These cooler temperatures allow the grapes to slowly build up their sugar content and reach perfect ripeness in late September and early October when the harvest is in full swing.
The DOC Aglianico del Vulture label requires special attention, from the location of the vineyards to the ageing of the wines. The wines, made exclusively from the Aglianico grape, must be aged for at least one year. If the word "Riserva" is written on the label, the wine has been aged for at least one extra year in oak casks.
Mainly vinified as reds, DOC Aglianico del Vulture can also be "spumante" - sparkling.
Taking on all the characteristics of the union of a unique terroir and the ancient Aglianico grape variety, the wines of DOC Aglianico del Vulture are powerful. The tannins, acidity and concentration of the wine are the main attractions of these reds when young. With time, the black fruit aromas develop and move into scents of spices, tar, earth and dark chocolate. Often the wines can be laid down for a few years to reveal their full potential.
