A must-try reference, considered among the greatest Italian wine producers, Paternoster is a name closely associated with the history of viticulture in Mont Vultur, in Basilicata, in the southern region of Italy. It all started with a man by the name of Anselmo, who first made the decision to continue growing the vines inherited from his father. It was in 1925 that Anselmo began to market his Aglianico wines in bottles, some of which still remain for personal consumption by family and friends. 1925 thus marked a key date in the history of the Paternoster family, which has continued to perpetuate this know-how and love of the vine through each new generation. The third generation is now at the helm of the Paternoster estate. From one vintage to the next, Paternoster has stood out as one of the greatest names in Italian winegrowing, loudly lauded by the press and international critics, including Wine Spectator, the Wine Advocate and Gambero Rosso.
The Paternoster vineyards extend over 20 hectares of vines in the Barile production area. "Rotondo Macarico - Pian di Carro” and “Gelosia" are the flagship wines of the estate.
The cellars, where the wines from the Barile wine region are produced, are located in the family estate of Villa Rontondo. This is where the Aglianico nicknamed "Vulture" is pressed, fermented and aged. The old barriques and precious oak barrels used for the flagship cuvées Don Anselmo and Rotondo have been placed in the historic cellars of Barile, where they enjoy the cool temperature and darkness of an environment dug out in the volcanic rock of Mont Vulture.
Produced in the Aglianico del Vulture D.O.C appellation, the Don Anselmo Paternoster cuvée pays homage to the current owner’s grandfather and founder of the estate. A true symbol, it embodies the continuity of a heritage passed down from generation to generation and an undying love for the Mont Vultur landscape.
With its production limited to around 150,000 bottles per year, Paternoster consistently embodies the excellence of viticulture in Basilicata.
