Description

A Powerful and Elegant Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

The property
Located a few kilometres from Saint-Émilion, on the right bank of Bordeaux, Château de Ferrand was founded in 1702 by Elie de Bétoulaud and acquired in December 1977 by Baron Bich. Since 1994, his daughter Pauline and her husband Philippe Chandon-Moët have taken the reins of the property, carrying out numerous improvements and innovations, which were rewarded in 2012 by the classification of Château de Ferrand as a Grand Cru Classé. Gonzague de Lambert has been director of Château de Ferrand since 2017. Made with great precision, the wines of Château de Ferrand are recognised for their structure, their aromas of very ripe red fruits mixed with a delicate freshness and fine tannins.

The vineyard
Covering an area of 42 hectares all in one piece, the vineyard is planted on clay-limestone soil at an altitude of 100 metres. One of the highest properties in the Saint-Émilion appellation, the vines enjoy great ventilation and optimal drainage thanks to the natural slope.

Certified Terra Vitis since 2012 and HVE level 3 since 2018, the Château de Ferrand team manages the estate by applying environmentally friendly practices both in the vineyard (mechanical soil tillage, inter-row grassing, manual harvesting) and in the 10 hectares of forest surrounding the vineyard.

Harvested manually, the grapes are rigorously sorted before being vatted by gravity in a completely renovated cellar.

Vinification and ageing are carried out on a plot-by-plot basis in order to amplify the expression of each specific terroir.

The vintage
Spring was marked by a combination of high temperatures during the day and cool nights, ideal conditions to promote good development of the vines. The rainy days and thunderstorms at the end of June were followed by a cold, rainy and less sunny period until September when, finally, favourable conditions optimised the proper ripening of the grapes.

The blend
The Château de Ferrand 2014 is made from a blend of Merlot (82%), Cabernet Sauvignon (5%) and Cabernet Franc (12%).

The tasting
Colour
The wine has a deep and intense colour.
Nose
Complex and ripe, the nose combines intense fruity aromas with delicate roasted notes.
Palate
With a delicious freshness on the attack, the palate seduces with its rich aromatic palette, powerful tannins and length
