Description
The Purity and Elegance of a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
The property
Located a few kilometres from Saint-Émilion, on the right bank of Bordeaux, Château de Ferrand was founded in 1702 by Elie de Bétoulaud and acquired in December 1977 by Baron Bich. Since 1994, his daughter Pauline and her husband Philippe Chandon-Moët have taken the reins of the property, carrying out numerous improvements and innovations, which were rewarded in 2012 by the classification of Château de Ferrand as a Grand Cru Classé. Gonzague de Lambert has been director of Château de Ferrand since 2017. Made with great precision, the wines of Château de Ferrand are recognised for their structure, their aromas of very ripe red fruits mixed with a delicate freshness and fine tannins.
The vineyard
Covering an area of 42 hectares all in one piece, the vineyard is planted on clay-limestone soil at an altitude of 100 metres. One of the highest properties in the Saint-Émilion appellation, the vines enjoy great ventilation and optimal drainage thanks to the natural slope.
Certified Terra Vitis since 2012 and HVE level 3 since 2018, the Château de Ferrand team manages the estate by applying environmentally friendly practices both in the vineyard (mechanical soil tillage, inter-row grassing, manual harvesting) and in the 10 hectares of forest surrounding the vineyard.
Harvested manually, the grapes are rigorously sorted before being vatted by gravity in a completely renovated cellar.
Vinification and ageing are carried out on a plot-by-plot basis in order to amplify the expression of each specific terroir.
The vintage
The month of April was marked by low temperatures, causing a delay in the vines and a late frost, which spares the property. The good climatic conditions of spring and summer were beneficial for the development of the vines. The mild and fresh late season allowed the harvest of grapes to take place under perfect sanitary conditions, yielding grapes of very good quality.
The blend
The Château de Ferrand 2017 is made from a blend of Merlot (81%) and Cabernet Franc (19%).
The tasting
With its great finesse, this Château de Ferrand 2017 harmoniously expresses the peculiarities of each grape variety making up its blend. The velvety notes of Merlot blend harmoniously with the structured tannins, freshness and aromatic complexity of Cabernet Franc.
