Description

The style of a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé

The estate
Located northeast of Saint-Émilion, Château Sansonnet joined the elite circle of Saint-Émilion Grands Crus Classés in 2012. This beautiful property has been the subject of a vast development plan for the entire vineyard, aimed to further improve the quality of the wines. In 2009, Marie-Bénédicte Lefèvre took over the management of the estate with great ambition, passion and determination, aiming to elevate it to the height of the Saint-Emilion appellation.

The vineyard
Enjoying a superb location, the Château Sansonnet vineyard covers 6.96 hectares of vines in one piece. The vines, which are 35 years old on average, are planted in a great terroir composed of a thin layer of clay on a limestone subsoil. Following a global approach that aims to show respect to the environment, the vines are subject to sustainable phytosanitary treatments with ploughing of the soil. The Château Sansonnet vineyard is also committed to an EMS process and is HVE Level 3 (High Environmental Value) certified.

The winemaking
Manual harvest in crates. Cluster and single-berry sorting, followed by densimetric sorting. Gravity-led vatting. Small thermoregulated double frustoconical stainless steel tanks and small thermoregulated wooden tanks.

The ageing
12 to 18 months, depending on the vintage.

The blend
Merlot (85%), cabernet franc (8%), cabernet sauvignon (7%).

The tasting

Tasted en primeur, the Château Sansonnet 2019 displays a deep garnet red colour. Intensely aromatic, the bouquet springs forth from the glass, revealing notes of black cherry, blueberry compote, black plum and raspberry. Notes of black pepper, blackcurrant and spicy notes of cumin then appear. On the palate, this fine red wine from Saint-Emilion displays a full and tasty body with crisp and delicious fruit, structured by ripe and silky tannins. With an exquisite freshness, this wine lingers long on the finish, revealing the signature minerality of the Saint-Émilion terroir.
