The estate
The first traces of Villemaurine date back to the Moorish era, when it was named “Ville Maure” (or "Moorish City"). Since 2005, Château Villemaurine has belonged to the Onclin family. Led by the passionate and talented Justin Onclin, Château Villemaurine produces iconic wines from the appellation, high-quality wines from an extraordinary terroir.

The vineyard
Superbly located in the heart of the village of Saint-Émilion, the Château Villemaurine vineyard covers 7 hectares of vines, 6 of which are in production. The vines are planted in clay-limestone soils upon the famous limestone subsoil of the appellation.

The vintage
With a contrasting climatology, 2019 was marked by a mild winter, a very wet spring and a scorching summer. The significant thermal amplitudes between night and day, favoured a nice ripeness of the fruit, while ensuring great freshness as well. The clay-limestone soils of the vineyard allowed the vines to avoid the significant water stress. In September, the Indian summer and some rainy days helped ensure a peaceful harvest, yielding superb fruit with thick and deeply coloured skins.

The winemaking
For this 2019 vintage of Château Villemaurine, the vinification of the musts took place quickly and yielded light-coloured, fruity juices, rich in tannins and very fresh. The malo-lactic fermentation was carried out in barrels.

The ageing
80% new French barrels, 20% in barrels of one previous wine.

The blend
Merlot (80%), cabernet franc (20%).

The tasting
Tasted en primeur, the Château Villemaurine 2019 will seduce fans of great Saint-Emilion red wines with its intense and fruity aromatic expression. On the palate, this wine has a firm structure, softened by smooth tannins. The limestone soil of Saint-Emilion expresses itself wonderfully on the taut palate with a saline minerality. The Château Villemaurine 2019 certainly promises to be a very great vintage ending in -9 at the property.
