Description
The elegance and richness of a Saint-Émilion red wine
The estate
The first traces of Villemaurine date back to Moorish times, when it was known as "Ville Maure." Today, Château Villemaurine belongs to the Lefèvre family, owners of several châteaux including Château Sansonnet.
The 2022 vintage is the second to be produced by the family at the head of the estate, who, wishing to preserve the identity of this cru, have chosen to change the ageing methods to reduce the woodiness and leave more room for the fruit and aromas of this Grand Cru Classé, which exudes the finesse of its extraordinary terroir.
The vineyard
Superbly situated in the heart of the village of Saint-Émilion, the Château Villemaurine vineyard stretches across 8 hectares of vines, 6 hectares of which are in production. The vines are an average of 35 years old and are planted on clay-limestone soils underlain by the famous asteriated limestone. Château Villemaurine is HVE 3 certified.
The vintage
The year 2022 was marked by drought and heatwaves, bringing about early harvests.
Winemaking and ageing
The grapes are harvested by hand in crates, using a double vibrating sorting table, manual sorting and densimetry, followed by gravity-fed vatting. Vatting for 28 days, during which time the cap is pumped over and punched down, followed by malolactic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The wine is aged for 16 months in small French oak barrels (70% of which are new) as well as 500-litre barrels and 2 amphorae.
Blend
Château Villemaurine 2022 is a blend of Merlot (85%) and Cabernet Franc (15%).
