The Marche appellation, located in central-eastern Italy, reflects the close link between the Marche region and winegrowing, which dates back to the 10th century BC thanks to the Greeks, founders of the city of Ancona. This IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) covers the entire region. Therefore any Marche wine produced in the 5 provinces of the region (Ancona, Ascoli Piceno, Fermo, Macerata and Pesaro Urbino) is part of the Marche appellation.
Although the IGT Marche was actually created in 1995, its origins go back further. As early as 1596, Andrea Bacci, in the 5th book of his treatise "De naturalis vinorum historia," in which he deals with the history of Italian wines known up to that time, traced an oenological map covering all the towns of the Marche region as far as Pesaro.
The richness of this appellation comes from its mosaic of wines with singular styles. The white wines of Marche are fresh, floral and fragrant, while the red wines, from a slightly later harvest, allure with their finesse and enveloping structure. They have an intense colour and truly lasting scents typical of the grape varieties grown (Sangiovese, Syrah, Pinot Grigio, Trebbiano Toscano, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, etc.)
Many factors give Marche wines their unique style. The south and southeast-facing vineyards extend from the coastal zone to the medium height hills. The vines are therefore planted between 50 and 650 metres above sea level and benefit from a Mediterranean climate that ensures cold winters and hot summers. In the hills, where the vineyards are mainly located, the sedimentary formations, characteristic of the region, are of a clay-limestone composition, sometimes sandy or gravelly, allowing the soils to be deep enough to have a good water content.
The exposure of the vineyards, the climate and the characteristics of the land constitute an exceptional terroir favourable to the cultivation of the different grape varieties and to the expression of characteristics of the grapes varietals, giving the wines inimitable aromatic bouquets.
