Muga is a family-run esate that was established in 1931, and it is now one of the most emblematic winemakers in the Rioja region in northern Spain.
Bodega Muga has paid constant attention to the creation of great wines that reflect the entire typicity and authenticity of Rioja ever since its very beginnings. They have done this through respecting traditions and the know-how from the past, the use of egg whites to clarify wine, and working with noble materials. Bodega Muga is one of the rare estates in Spain to have its own barrel makers, which allows it to have absolute control over the ageing of its wines through adapting the the wood origin and the barrels to the personality of each vintage.
The various Muga vineyards, El Estepal, Loma, Baltracones, Loma Alta and Sajazarra, are located around Haro. These vineyards grow in exceptional terroirs in which their geographical and climatic features define the typicality of the Rioja Alta sub-region. This area has both a Mediterranean and continental climate that benefit from the influence of the Atlantic Ocean. This creates significant temperature differences between day and night, which helps develop balanced flavour concentration and acidity in the berries. Rioja traditional varieties make up the core of Muga wines. For the reds, the iconic Tempranillo defines the Muga style along with other varieties like Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. For the whites, the estate grows Viura and Malvasia.
Authentic, harmonious, tasty and elegant wines come from these exceptional terroirs, which express all the Muga family’s passion for creating fine Rioja wines.
