Description

The intensity and generosity of an iconic Burgundy Grand Cru

The estate

Founded in 1782 and producing wine across nine Burgundy appellations, Domaine Henri Rebourseau is one of the largest estates in owning Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte de Nuits. The estate accommodates land assets of exceptional vines planted on lands that have been worked for more than 1,400 years. Today, the Surrel family cares for this amazing heritage, using biological and biodynamic agricultural practices. It is the territory, rather than the House, that garners the esteem for the wine’s identity.

The vineyard

This Grand cru 2020 is a Chambertin-Clos de Bèze wine that stems from its eponymous plot, which happens to be the oldest walled vineyard in Burgundy. Facing east, the Grand cru of Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is placed halfway up a hill on a on a rather steep slope which allows it to benefit from a sunny climate and a marl and limestone-influenced soil. This 0.33 hectare piece of land accommodates 51-year-old vines that are perfectly ventilated from the north and protected from the rains by the west winds.

The vintage

This vintage was marked by an unprecedentedly rainy start to the season in Burgundy, caused by sunny conditions and higher than normal seasonal temperatures. The winter rains replenished ground water which could then compensate the lack of rainfall during the growing season. Unfortunately, a short rainy period disrupted flowering leaving a notably low yield. Despite that, the grapes matured under excellent conditions and ripened up to the harvest, gradually developing remarkable tannins.

The wine

This prestigious wine comes from land acquired by the Abbaye de Bèze in 630 after it was given as a gift by the Duke of Burgundy Amalgaire II. The secret of this plot is that dates back fifteen centuries, which has allowed the soil to be naturally enriched and to develop an exceptionally homogeneous terroir.

Winemaking and ageing

The macerations produced colourful and balanced wines with great ageing potential. Fast vinification with minimal intervention was chosen for this vintage.
