Located on the slopes of Mount Conero, near Ancona, the Conero appellation produces one of the best Marche wines.
The wine of Ancona was known to be of superior quality as far back as Antiquity. The Roman writer Pliny wrote: "On the Adriatic Sea, we can mention, among others, the ‘Praetorian’ wine produced in the Ancona area." Apicius Marcus Gavio, a personality during the Roman era, also speaks of a wine called "anconetanum" - red and rather full-bodied.
Derived from the DOC Rosso Conero (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), the Conero appellation became a DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) in 2004.
The production of Conero wines follows strict regulations that require the use of a large majority of Montepulciano (85% minimum) in the blends, which may be supplemented by Sangiovese (15% maximum). The production area of the appellation covers the municipalities of Ancona, Offagna, Camerano, Sirolo and Numana as well as part of Castelfidardo and Osimo.
Conero wines have such a unique character among Italian wines thanks to the exceptional terroir of the appellation. Benefitting from a continental climate as well as strong sunlight protecting them from the sea winds, the vineyards are planted on hillsides on clay-limestone soils rich in minerals.
With their ruby red colour, the wines of Conero reveal an aromatic bouquet mixing with finesse fruity and spicy fragrances. Harmonious on the palate, these wines are full-bodied, releasing notes of liquorice and pepper. These Italian wines pair perfectly with roasted meats and vegetables.
