A silky and refined great wine from Ribera del Duero
The property
Since its acquisition by the Álvares family in 1982, Vega Sicilia has continued to grow and establish its international reputation. A legendary estate, Vega Sicilia originates from the north of Castile, in the wine-growing area of the DO Ribera del Duero but also extends into the DO Toro appellation in the south of Castile. Today, a continuous search for excellence, a beautiful harmony with nature, a rigor and unwavering dedication make the Spanish estate a prestigious reference. Over the years, other vineyards like Pintia have come to embrace and magnify the philosophy of Vega Sicilia. Thus, the extreme care given to the vines as well as to the winemaking signs the great wines of Spain that come from unique lands.
The vineyard
Bordering the Duero River, the 210 hectares of vines are divided into three grape varieties: tempranillo (also known as tinto fino), cabernet sauvignon and merlot. 140 hectares of this production are reserved for the production of Valbuena and Unico cuvées. The entire vineyard is managed sustainably.
Coming from exceptional terroirs with a total surface area of 40 hectares, the vines, which are on average 35 years old, are planted between 700 and 900 meters above sea level on sandy-clay soils. This Unico 2014 from the bodega Vega Sicilia is only revealed after at least 10 years of aging in the estate's cellars. This legendary wine from the Ribera del Duero is among the greatest crus of Spain and the world.
Vinification and aging
After fermentation, the Unico cuvée begins one of the longest barrel aging processes in the world for a red wine, extending over nearly 10 years between vat, wood and bottle. It goes through different stages in a variety of containers: 225 L barrels of French and American oak as well as 220 HL foudres, each batch benefiting from an aging adapted to its profile. After 6 years in barrels (partially new for French oak) and in foudres, the wine continues its refinement for an additional 4 years in bottle, thus completing an exceptional aging, guarantee of its complexity and legendary character.
