Description

The finesse and complexity of an exceptional Chianti

The estate

In the heart of Tuscany, nestled between the green hills of Chianti and the magnificent panorama of the Crete Senesi, lies an unmissable reference point on the Italian scene: the San Felice Estate. A true historical monument, the bishops of Arezzo and Siena were already fighting over the famous Tuscan vineyard in 714. Today, with over 150 hectares of vineyards, the legend continues thanks to the estate's unique philosophy: a quest for excellence and continuous improvement.

San Felice is also a great diversity of terroirs spread over three of Tuscany's leading appellations: Chianti Classico, Montalcino and Bolgheri. For decades, this estate has succeeded in maintaining the perfect balance between tradition and renewal, a signature that can be found at the heart of their creations.

The vineyard

This 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is made from a plot selection from the Poggio Rosso vineyard located in Castelnuovo Berardenga east of Siena in the Tuscany region of Italy.

The vines are planted on stony, calcareous marl soils known as "alberese" and shale known as "galestro", both typical of the Tuscan terroir.

The vintage

With high temperatures in March and April, the 2018 vintage got off to a relatively early start in terms of growth development. Following a relatively rainy May, temperatures began to rise again in June, suggesting a summer of pleasant temperatures. September saw a succession of sunny days, but with a wide diurnal temperature range, allowing for optimal ripening of the grapes.

Winemaking and ageing

The grapesweare harvested in the last week of September and underwent a 20-25 day fermentation. Following malolactic fermentation, the wines were aged for 24 months in 500-litre French oak barrels. Finally, the wine underwent an additional 15 months of bottle ageing before being released on the market.
