Founded in 1859 by Evgueni Louis Max in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the Maison Louis Max is now one of the largest organically-farmed estates in Burgundy, certified by Ecocert. The Louis Max estate covers some twenty hectares of Burgundy's most prestigious appellations. Louis Max owns the famous Monopole du Clos La Marche in Mercurey, Mercurey Premier Cru Les Vasées, Mercurey Les Caudroyes, Les Plantenays in Rully, as well as some very fine terroirs in Côte Châlonnaise. Now owned by Geneva businessman Stanko Subotic, a lover of Maison Louis Max and Nuits-Saint-Georges, the estate strives to achieve excellence in the making of its wines every year. In 2014, Jean-François Joliette, from Beaune, became director of the estate, and David Duban, a leading winemaker from the Côte de Nuits, joined Louis Max as technical director. Together, these two Burgundy experts have made Maison Louis Max one of the most prestigious names in Nuits-Saint-Georges.
Maison Louis Max strives to make its wines with total respect for nature. That's why the vines are grown exclusively using organic methods. The soil is ploughed with a horse, natural fertilisers and indigenous yeasts are used, and human intervention is kept to a minimum. Louis Max also owns Château Pech-Latt in the Corbières appellation and Domaine de la Lyre in the Côtes du Rhône.
Regularly cited by the greatest critics and international journalists, the wines of Maison Louis Max embody the excellence of Burgundy and are renowned the world over.
